Do You Have Neuropathy In Your Feet

Because neuropathy is generally not well known as a disease, most people really aren't sure what's happening to them in the beginning. Today's useful, basic article from articlesnatch.com (see link below) helps explain whether what you're feeling is neuropathy or not. Even after reading this, you should get confirmation from a doctor, or better still a neurologist. There are many forms of neuropathy and also many causes. It's important to get an accurate diagnosis on both counts. Finally, the remedies mentioned here are just a few of the many possibilities available and again, doctor's advice is very important.

Do I Have Neuropathy In My Feet?
By: Brandt R Gibson DPM - a foot and ankle specialist with special interest in neuropathy and the new treatments.

Often, I see patients in our office concerned about strange feelings to their feet. Many are found to have neuropathy (or peripheral neuropathy). Neuropathy is the poor functioning of nerves and can lead to significant abnormalities in the feet and legs. Do you have neuropathy? Some simple questions are:

- Are your feet numb or do your feet feel dead? - When you injure your feet, do you feel pain? - When walking on your feet, do you have difficulty feeling the feet or do you trip regularly because you can't feel your feet? - Can you feel heat or cold in my feet or hands? - Do your feet tingle? - Do you have regular "pins and needles" sensation to your feet? - Do you have burning, stabbing, shooting or electrical shock pains in your feet? - Are your feet overly sensitive to touch, including pain from bed sheets or other items that shouldn't hurt? - Do you feel like there is cotton, leather, or sock on your foot, even when there isn't? - Do your feet hurt significantly at night and keep you awake?

An abnormal answer to any of these questions usually indicates neuropathy. Neuropathy can be a complex problem with multiple possible causes including diabetes, AIDS or HIV, toxins and metallic poisons, certain chemicals, alcoholism, vitamin deficiencies or nutritional imbalances, it may also occur from systemic diseases (kidney failure, liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, abnormal blood proteins, cancer especially with chemotherapy, leukemia and shingles). Entrapment may also lead to the symptoms of neuropathy. Diabetes is the most common, however in the United States.

There are multiple theories on the cause of neuropathy, but the most common theories included blood flow interruption to the nerves or nerve fiber damage (or a combination of these). Therefore, for many years it was thought nothing could be done to improve neuropathy. You may have been told this about your discomfort. That is no longer the case. Many new treatments are coming that may help neuropathy.

The most common natural substances to improve neuropathy are B complex vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B6, B12 and folic acid. Many of the over-the-counter vitamins that contain these products, however, are in a form that are not as easily absorbed or utilized by the body. In our research, we have found two products that provide the vitamins in a form that are beneficial and easily utilized by the body.

1. Metanx - A prescription item that contains L-methoylfolate, Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and Methylcobalamin (all natural forms of folic acid, B6 and B12 respectively). These products work together to produce increased blood flow to the nerves and assist in nerve repair. Many people are encountering improved feeling in their feet and decrease of their symptoms. It usually will require treatment for at least 4-6 months to insure it has sufficient time to help repair nerves.

2. Neuremedy - A over-the-counter item that contains a form of B1 (benfotiamine) that is absorbed and modified by the body to the active form of B1 (thiamine). Most forms of this vitamin fail to be absorbed in the body, but the benfotiamine of Neuremedy is easily absorbed and utilized by the body. It has been shown to nourish dysfunctional nerves and allow them to conduct impulses more normally. It has been utilized since the early 1960s in Europe and Asia on thousands of patients.

So, neuropathy although a common problem doesn't need to continue to cause problems in your life. It can be treated often very effectively through the use of one of these two options. Many other options are also in the works.

Hands Or Feet Always Cold It Could Be Neuropathy

You may think that today's post from healthnewslibrary.com (see link below) is a seasonal one (if you live in the Northern hemisphere's current Winter that is) but the point of the article is to highlight the fact that if you have cold feet or hands, you may also have neuropathy (or other conditions) and many patients wonder why their hands and feet are so cold (or warm!) when the external temperature is normal. The article gives a very good overview of what the reasons for this could be and why and suggests a few things to improve the condition. Strange symptoms in the feet or hands are very familiar to almost all neuropathy patients but they don't always understand why this is happening. A vague diagnosis of nerve damage explains very little - this post fills in a few gaps.

Why Your Hands and Feet are Always Cold
Randy B. January 18, 2015

You wear socks to keep your feet warm, as well as mittens to keep your hands warm. You may even make some coffee, hot tea or hot chocolate just hold in your hands to keep them warm.

Have you ever wondered why your hands and feet are always cold?

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it is kept at a satisfying temperature, controlled by the blood vessels. They circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout the whole body. When the external temperature falls, the sensory receptors in the skin worn the brain to constrict the blood vessels, as this allows smaller amounts of blood to the surface of the skin to conserve warmth in the torso of the body.

When the temperature drops, the body will always take into consideration what has priority for staying warm and conserving life, and in this case your organs are more important than your hands and feet. You may not think so at the time when your hands and feet are cold.
Hormones Could Be Why Your Hands and Feet Are Always Cold

Low progesterone or too much Estrogen Dominance influencing thyroid function (low thyroid) can cause cold hands and feet.
Low Adrenal function or Adrenal Insufficiency can also be the cause of cold hands and feet.

Cold hands and feet could be due to an under active thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism. This condition is more common in women, though men can suffer also from it.

Hypothyroidism not only cause cold hands and feet, also including fatigue, hair loss and weight gain, just to mention a few symptoms.
Poor Circulation and Nerve Damage

If you are taking medication for an under active thyroid but still are experiencing cold hands and feet, then you may have Raynaud’s syndrome.
Raynaud’s syndrome is indicated by a loss of blood flow to the hands and feet caused by spasms in the blood vessels (consult with your medical provider to see if you have this condition).

Cold feet could be due to peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy symptoms may include one or more of the following, numbness in the feet, tingling or a burning sensation in the extremities (legs and feet).

Peripheral neuropathy is a sign of underlying nerve damage, caused by diseases like exposure to toxins (Mercury Toxicity or Amalgam Illness), infections, vitamin deficiencies, and even diabetes. If you suspect this may be the issue, see your medical care provider as soon as possible doctor.

Having these symptoms and ignoring them only allows for more nerve damage to occur. Your doctor may perform several tests, including nerve conduction studies (NCS) to evaluate how messages are being transmitted from the brain to the peripheral nerves.

In the event of peripheral vascular disease, the arteries narrow with a marked reduction of blood flow, notably to the fingers and toes.
Over Growth of Bacteria

Candida is a good bacteria when under control. But if candida is negatively affected in the body, and allowing to overgrow, one can experienced a vast of problems, and including cold hands and feet.
Faulty Immune System

Varying conditions and diseases can cause cold hands and feet. They include multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders in general, primary chronic polyarthritis, chronic candidiasis, cancer, neurodermatitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

There are a number of other cause for why your hands and feet are always cold, such as:
Poor circulation due to coronary heart disease
Working with vibrating equipment (like a jack hammer)
A side-effect of certain medications
Smokers and other diseases that affecting blood flow in the tiny blood vessels of the skin (Women smokers may be prone to this)
Stress
Food and other allergies
Chemical sensitivities
Parasites (they can cause a mal-absorption syndrome which very commonly mimics anemia and conditions where the body feels cold all over including hands and feet)

Recommendations to Help Warm Your Cold Hands and Feet

Cayenne Pepper in powder form can be used externally as well as internally. One-eighth of a teaspoon sprinkled into each shoe or glove can help the body generate heat.

Water-soluble components in cayenne dilate capillaries in the skin surface, producing an immediate sensation of heat. Oil-soluble compounds of cayenne applied topically reach deeper tissues within 15 minutes, and generate warmth for hours.

Ginkgo Biloba is documented for improving circulation, and may help for cold hands and feet.

Ginger Root is a warming herb helpful in improving circulation.

Korean Ginseng is also used for circulation and the nerves system.

Aerobic exercises or just any regular exercise program increases circulation of blood and nutrients, and also helping to flush the body of toxins.

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts the B-complex vitamins, which can help with the nerve system and circulation.

Hands Legs And Feet Neuropathy Vid

Today's post from YouTube (see link below) is a good introductory video to neuropathy. Interesting and simply explained, it's worth viewing for both newcomers and experienced patients. Of course, it doesn't cover all the bases but provides a surprising amount of information in ten minutes and stimulates further research and investigation.

Peripheral neuropathy: Burning and numbness in hands, legs and feet
Dr. Larry Santora
Published on 21 Apr 2013

Peripheral neuropathy is an uncomfortable burning or numbing sensation in the feet and legs. The most common causes? First is diabetes, and the second is alcohol consumption. Neurologist Amir Shokrae, M.D., explains the causes and symptoms and demonstrates the instruments used for detection of this painful condition.

Shokrae is joined by Larry Santora, M.D., medical director of the Orange County Heart Institute and host of "Health Matters with Dr. Larry Santora" television series, which airs weekly on PBS OC. Visit www.drsantora.com.

Produced by Chapman University's Panther Productions, "Health Matters with Dr. Larry Santora" is sponsored by St. Joseph Health, St. Joseph Hospital, Biotronik, Churm Media, The Widdicombe Family, Medtronic, Weaver Health Solutions and Abbott Vascular.

Nerve Problems in the Feet

Today's video (Uploaded to YouTube by DrMichaelGrahamDPM on 1 Mar 2011) is not a good one if you've got a hangover I'm afraid, (with apologies to all reumatologists, neurologists and other specialists who will understand every word!). It's a 'silent movie' or slide show looking at the workings of the nerves in the feet and is fascinating if you wondered what the nerves. muscles and bones actually look like in the feet that are giving you such strange sensations or pain for much of the day. You may not understand much of the descriptive text but can mostly get the gist of what's going on. After six and a half minutes you can probably recognise the connections with neuropathy.
It's another world!

Nerves on the bottom of the foot have to make it through 2 tunnels in order to make it to the spine. Faulty foot mechanics and severely afftect these nerves. Watch this video to learn more about this very condition and to find out about what additional factors can taken to help.

Neuropathy Can Affect More Than Your Feet Vid

Today's short video from creativepharmacist.com is addressed towards diabetic neuropathy sufferers but in this case, the information applies to many other neuropathy sufferers and talks mainly about autonomic neuropathy (neuropathy that affects involuntary functions of the body: digestion, sexual performance, breathing etc). It's very short, doesn't tell you much but leads you towards more information on their site. It's very possible that you weren't aware that neuropathy can affect other areas of your body apart from your feet and legs. For more information on this blog, check out 'autonomic neuropathy' in the alphabetical list to the right of the blog, or use the search function to find more articles on the subject.

Are These Smart Shoes The Answer For Neuropathic Feet

Today's post from europe.newsweek.com (see link below) promotes something people living with neuropathy have been wanting for decades and that's a shoe that is specifically designed to help them walk without the innate ugliness that characterises most orthopaedic footwear. The reason is that as insoles, they can be fitted inside your own shoes. That said, please don't rejoice too soon - it's only at the prototype stage (haven't we heard that all too often!!). Nevertheless, if the advertising blurb is to be believed than his sort of invention could be invaluable to people in danger of falling or stumbling due to weird nerve signals in their feet. if it's true that you can feel the vibrations where your feet touch the ground, then we may be able to re-train our feet to walk more normally, despite what the neuropathy tells us. Worth keeping an eye out for.

Smart Shoes Help The Elderly and Disabled Walk

New high-tech shoes and insoles have been developed that can help elderly, ill and disabled people walk without fear of falling over.

Unveiled at the Wearable Technology Show in London on Tuesday, the Path Feel insoles and Path Finder shoes from U.K. startup Walk With Path provide tactile feedback and visual cues to assist walking.

“If you walk and you don’t have a good feeling of the ground, you’ve got to be very careful, you keep checking every step, you need to look at the ground and see how you put your leg on the ground,” Iddo Wald, a design engineer at Walk With Path, tells Newsweek. “Path gives the confidence needed to walk without falling.

“We had a patient who suffers from a spinal cord injury and actually had no feeling of the ground at all but he could feel the vibration. It’s really exciting.”

Path's insoles can be fitted into any pair of shoes.Newsweek

The intelligent insoles and shoes are designed to assist people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy—a condition brought about by a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease.

Pressure sensors in the Path Feel insoles provide haptic feedback that vibrates the wearer’s foot and informs them when it is touching the ground. A companion app also gathers data in the hope of better understanding peripheral neuropathy.

The Path Finder shoes are designed specifically for Parkinson’s patients who suffer from freezing of gait—a disabling clinical phenomenon that prevents people from walking or causes them to walk with extremely short steps. Lasers projected out of the shoes in a green line aim to provide visual clues to help the sufferer focus on putting one foot in front of the other.

According to the National Parkinson Foundation, 38 percent of people with Parkinson’s suffer from falls each year, while AgeUK estimates one-in-the people over the age of 65 fall over. The hope is that both the insoles and the shoes can help bring those numbers down.

Both products are currently in the prototyping stage, with several London universities conducting trials. Early tests have seen some users reducing their freezing of gait by over 50 percent.

Tingling And Burning Feet Why

Today's post from livestrong.com (see link below) will be self-evident for those neuropathy sufferers who've lived with the problem for some time but what happens when you experience these feelings for the first time? You can be bewildered as to why this is happening to you and you may never have heard the word 'neuropathy' let alone have an understanding of what it means. This article will fill in some of the gaps for you and give you a sound basis for your first visit to a doctor or specialist. Worth a read for nerve damage 'newbies'

Causes of Burning and Tingling Feet
by NIYA JONES Last Updated: Jun 27, 2016

Most people don't think much about their feet until they hurt or give you trouble. Burning and tingling in the feet usually signals nerve irritation that may be due to injury, infection or other medical disorders. Chronic nerve damage, known as peripheral neuropathy, commonly causes a pins-and-needles sensation in the feet that can make it tough to walk. Depending on the cause, potential complications of peripheral neuropathy include foot ulcers, muscle loss and paralysis, in rare cases.

Metabolic Disorders

A host of metabolic conditions can lead to burning and tingling in the feet. Diabetes is among the most frequent causes. People with diabetes who have peripheral neuropathy are prone to foot injuries, ulcers and infections. Without appropriate medical care and regular foot exams, these foot infections can progress to gangrene and ultimately require amputation. Chronic kidney and liver diseases are other potential causes of peripheral neuropathy. Damage to either of these organs can result in a buildup of metabolic waste products that may irritate the nerves in the legs and feet. Disorders of the thyroid gland can also cause burning and tingling in the feet, often accompanied by muscle cramps in the legs.

Infections

Many infections can lead to inflammation of the nerves in the legs and feet. The viruses that cause chickenpox and mononucleosis are common culprits. Cytomegalovirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses can trigger intense burning and tingling in the legs and feet as well. Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, can also irritate nerves in the lower extremities. A rash usually precedes joint pain and peripheral neuropathy symptoms due to Lyme disease.
Toxins and Medications

Many toxins and medications can irritate nerves and lead to burning and tingling in the feet. Alcohol is one of the most common. Chronic exposure to large amounts of alcohol is thought to lead to nerve damage. Long-term alcohol abuse is also associated with nutritional deficiencies, such as deficiencies in vitamin B12, folate and thiamine. These vitamin deficiencies can result in burning, tingling, pain or numbness in the legs and feet. Heavy metals, including lead and mercury, can cause peripheral neuropathy as well. Medications used to treat seizure disorders, certain antibiotics and antiviral drugs are also associated with peripheral neuropathy. Chemotherapy drugs used for certain cancers frequently cause burning and tingling in the feet. Common offenders include platinum-based medications, thalidomide (Thalomid) and vincristine (Vincasar).

Autoimmune and Inflammatory Conditions

In some cases, the body's response to an infection rather than the infection itself leads to nerve damage. A condition called Guillain-Barré syndrome causes abrupt weakness and tingling in the lower extremities. Guillain-Barré syndrome occurs due to an autoimmune response wherein the body inadvertently attacks nerve tissue following a bacterial or viral infection. Left untreated, the disorder can progress to temporary paralysis and be life-threatening. Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren syndrome are other autoimmune disorders that can cause peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms tend to develop gradually with these conditions. Burning and tingling in the legs and feet can also sometimes occur with multiple sclerosis, an inflammatory disorder. Additional symptoms such as visual difficulties, bladder problems and muscle spasms are common with multiple sclerosis.
Tumors

Cancerous and noncancerous tumors can invade nerve tissue, resulting in peripheral neuropathy symptoms. Inflammation due to tumors that arise on or near nerves in the lower extremities can lead to burning and tingling in the feet. In some cases, cancer does not directly affect the nerves but can cause a condition known as a paraneoplastic syndrome. Paraneoplastic syndromes can result in a variety of symptoms, including muscle weakness and a burning sensation in the limbs.
When to Seek Medical Attention

In most cases, peripheral neuropathy symptoms begin gradually. If you abruptly develop burning and tingling in the feet, contact your healthcare provider without delay. If burning and tingling arise in association with muscle weakness or other nervous system symptoms -- such as visual problems, dizziness or loss of bladder or bowel control -- seek medical attention immediately. If you have an underlying medical condition, including diabetes, HIV or lupus, discuss your symptoms with your provider. Blood tests can be performed to check for nutritional deficiencies, and medications can be prescribed to ease symptoms.
