Mind - The boss | |||||||||||||||||||
A simple conflict may bring problems like irritability, impatience, restlessness, brooding, anxiety, depression, grief, fear, delusion, etc. (with or without crying). Some suffer silently and some show rage. In the initial stages, sleep can calm one’s mind, but no one can predict when it would get fogged or flare up again. To rule out these problems, one should take care and root out all predisposing and precipitating factors. Health means complete harmony of body and mind. There is an intimate relation between mind and body. Physical changes or symptoms can change one’s mind and, likewise, mood changes or mental illness can affect physical health. For example:
Until the discovery of antibiotics, the medicine world presumed that mind and body were one and the same. But now it has separated soul (mind) from the body. When we separate disease as physical illness and mental illness and treat them accordingly, it means that we are concentrating on disease and not on the man. Here one should be aware that when 10 persons drink the same contaminated water and if only 2-3 suffer, how one can blame bacteria or virus alone as the causative factor. There must be something beyond that i.e., our immunity, susceptibility, etc. Advanced medical science ignored research in this aspect and got deviated deep into the study of diseases in man instead of studying man in the midst of diseases. Like other diseases, mind disorders are also common, i.e. one in three might have suffered from one or other complaint in their lifetime. Some persons may manage the condition by themselves while some others may feel disabled and need support. Some disorders are transient, some disorders can persist and be treated and while some others may last a lifetime and not respond to any treatment. Among all, anxiety disorders are more prevalent in this tension-filled world. At least 10-20 per cent people suffer from it. Among them, most people ignore them and do not take any treatment. Further, if circumstances are not favourable continuously, with more tension and fear, the sufferer may sink into depression or panic disorders. With mind disorders, every person reacts differently to situations. They need to be advised/counselled/treated accordingly. For example, some may raise a great hue and cry for even a small thorn prick or injections but some would go for injections (multivitamin injections) voluntarily and often keep themselves energetic. Here, they tolerate pain voluntarily. This represents the mental state of the person. Further, someone would remain scared always that he might have a heart attack even after doing all sorts of investigations and it being diagnosed as simple gastritis. Likewise, some others would neglect heart attack as simple gastritis. Both are not normal and they both will face complications because of their mindset. Here, the first one needs to rely on doctor’s words to lead a happy life and the second one needs to approach a doctor to have proper care and medication. For any illness of the mind, accepting change is the easiest way than medicines to lead a comfortable life. Yesterday is history Tomorrow is a mystery Today is a gift – Live it happily without any tension

Mind disorders in elderly persons
Mind disorders in elderly persons
Elderly people usually develop many complaints and often need to live with it with the help of medicines. The persisting nature of disease and dependency of medicines can deteriorate them further in mental health with impinge on hope. Good quality of life is very much essential in old age or otherwise more than suffering to themselves, they will also become a burden to their family. So, with the fear of disease, they will be perfectly taking the list of medicines prescribed.
They are also often piled with mental stress and sleeplessness because of their anxiety, expectations (love / finance for survival) and fear about future. It can also reflect in their blood pressure, appetite, attention, activities, etc. While getting treatment, they are very keen to have sleeping pills also to have so

und sleep (to forget all their worries at least with sleep). Sleeping pills are really a boon for them. Anyhow with habit forming and continuous usage, adverse effects like forgetfulness, lack of concentration, confusion, tremours, weakness, dizziness, hallucinations, slow heart beat, constipation, etc are inevitable. If they are not coping up with circumstances, in course of time, they may also develop mind disorders like depression, mania, etc. Further even without any stress, memory related disorders can occur in elderly people because of atrophy of brain with ageing or due to mind / memory disorders like Amnesia or Dementia.
Common Mind disorders in elderly people are mood disorders, personality related mental illness, schizophrenia, psychotic disorder, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorders.
Anxiety disorders - Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional feeling triggered by anticipation of / fears for future events with memories of past events or rumination about the self.
Nightmare disorder – dream anxiety disorder with intensified fearful dreams
Panic disorders – are sudden attacks with accelerated or irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness, etc. It is often caused with unreasonable intensified fear (i.e., with or without specific cause) and anxiety.
Post-traumatic stress disorder - is a complex disorder in which affected person's memory, emotional responses, intellectual processes, and nervous system have all been disrupted by one or more traumatic experiences. It is sometimes summarized as "a normal reaction to abnormal events."
Delusion – a status of recurrent / persistent thought(s) / belief(s) which are really a false.
Hallucination is a false perception occurring without any identifiable external stimulus and indicates an abnormality in perception in the form of voices, smells, tastes, vision and touch sensations.
Delirium – a status of disorientation accompanied by cognitive impairment and fluctuating consciousness.
Hypochondrias – is medically meant for excessive fear of having a serious disease. These fears are not relieved even after medical examination / lab reports reveal no evidence of any disease or abnormal values.
Depression - unipolar depression are mental illnesses characterized by a profound and persistent feeling of sadness or despair and/or a loss of interest in things that were once pleasurable. Bipolar disorder (manic depression) involves abnormally "high" or pressured mood states, known as mania or hypomania, alternating with normal or depressed mood.
Memory related disorders
· Amnesia – is meant for partial or total loss of memory. Forgetfulness is medically termed as Amnesia (i.e. loss of memory). It may be also because of inattentiveness or lack of interest or due to brain dysfunctions also.
· Dementia – medically means declining memory. It may be rapid or have slow progression. Sufferers of dementia often miss their keys, umbrellas during start-up of the disease and later with progression of disease, they may get disoriented with way, place and can forget well-known persons, etc.
· Alzheimer's disease– is a progressive and degenerative disease of brain cells to cause forgetfulness. It can be called as mind destructive disorder since it slowly destroys one’s intelligence, skill, memory, thinking, personality, cleanliness, etc. Sometimes, they may even not able to recognize their family members or themselves.
General treatment– In old age, one needs love and care than the medicines. I.e., for them, family care is worth more than medical treatment or medicines. Further, as there is no treatment for ageing, currently, there is no specific treatment for memory loss or forgetfulness for elderly people. If they have more anxiety and depression, antidepressants will be prescribed.
Homeopathic approach– Mind or memory problems can cause many conflicts in life, since it can make one or other to take wrong decisions or to become irritable at times. So, memory problems should be treated in the initial stage itself to have peaceful environment. Some mind disorders are reversible and some may not be reversible. Further, most of the time, treatment can only halt the progress of the complaints. So it is always worthwhile to start treatment in the early stage itself. In mind disorders of elderly people, “Hope” should be always given and should never be given up.
"Cure rarely, comfort mostly, but console always'' as Hippocrates quotes, every doctor, irrespective of the system, needs to calm the sufferer’s mind with his reassuring words, and cure their diseases with their knowledge and medicines. Generally, in spite of proper care in all aspects i.e., taking healthy diet, health drinks, supplements like antioxidants, there will be falling memory in elderly people which is quiet common because of atrophy of brain. Even though there is no promising cure, Homeopathy can provide some hope to the sufferer and their family members as most constitutionally selected homeopathic medicine can rejuvenate brain to remain in endurance without any side-effects.
Homeopathic medicinescommonly used in mind disorders in elderly person are Aconite, Ambra grisea, Anacardium, Arg nit, Ars alb, Aurum met, Baryta carb, Belladonna, Bryonia, Caladium, Cal carb, Cannabis indica, Clematis, Conium, Cuprum met, Gelsemium, Hyoscyamus, Ignatia, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Nat mur, Nux vom, Opium, Pulsatilla, Phosphorus, Sepia, Silicea, Staphysagria, Stramonium, Sulphur, Zinc met, etc. Bach’s flower remedies like Aspen, Chestnut bud, Mimulus, Red chestnut, Scleranthus, Thuja, Vervain, White chestnut, etc., can also provide amazing results. These medicines can facilitate one’s mind in a better way to cope with the situation. These medicines should be taken under the advice and diagnosis of a qualified Homoeopath.
for new hope

Ticks Lyme Disease And Nervous Disorders
Today's post from topthings2know.com (see link below) looks at the potential link between fibromyalgia (also a form of neuropathy) and Lyme disease caused by ticks. There are several other articles here on the blog on the subject of Lyme disease and neuropathy (use the Search button) and it's an important topic because it's a cause of nerve damage that is so difficult to prevent or predict. It may seem to be a Summer disease, when the ticks are active but remember it's Summer somewhere in the world at all times! Apart from that, diagnosing Lyme disease and/or any of the associated problems that go with it is a nightmare for doctors - it's so difficult to tie down and variable in its effects. Hopefully you'll notice if you have been bitten in the Summer and the site of the bite will become inflamed and sore, leading to a trip to the doctor - then a possible link can more easily be established. However, many people are bitten without knowing it and Lyme disease symptoms only emerge much later. Worth taking precautions and being extra aware, especially if you make frequent trips into the countryside.

December 26, 2015
Lyme disease is the number one vector borne spreading epidemic worldwide, and mimics common diseases such as Fibromyalgia (FM), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis), autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and MS, as well as psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety. The CDC recently released new statistics showing that ten times more individuals have been affected with Lyme than previously suspected. Since the blood tests for diagnosing Lyme disease have been shown to be unreliable, we would expect that a certain percentage of those diagnosed with FM are in fact suffering from Lyme disease. This has been my personal experience. In the last 26 years, I have seen over 12,000 chronically ill individuals with Lyme and associated tick-borne disorders, many of whom have been to 10-20 doctors looking for answers for their chronic fatigue and musculoskeletal pain. Lyme and associated tick-borne infections were often one of the underlying causes of their problem.
A diagnosis of FM was previously established using the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 classification criteria, where a certain number of specific tender points were required on physical examination. This was recently shown to be an insensitive method for making the diagnosis and has been revised. Newer criteria include diagnostic variables such as the widespread pain index (WPI) associated with cognitive symptoms, unrefreshed sleep, fatigue, and a number of somatic symptoms. Unfortunately, these symptom criteria overlap other illnesses and are not specific. They don’t tell us why someone develops FM.
It is essential in medicine to get to the root cause of symptoms. In addition to an infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, which can cause fibromyalgia, we find that patients often have multifactorial causes for their illness. I call this syndrome Lyme-MSIDS. MSIDS stands for Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome, and represents sixteen potential overlapping medical problems contributing to persistent symptoms in my patients.
The first point on the MSIDS map is infections. Ticks are now containing multiple bacterial, viral and parasitic infections which can be transmitted simultaneously with Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease. Patients infected with Lyme disease and associated co-infections are much sicker and resistant to standard therapies. An example of a viral infection causing FM symptoms is human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6). Nearly 100% of adults today have been exposed, and it can reactivate later in life secondary to immunological and environmental factors. HHV-6 has been linked in the scientific literature as a possible cofactor in ADD, autism spectrum disorder and MS, apart from its links to CFS and Fibromyalgia. It is therefore one of many infections that can cause chronic fatigue and musculoskeletal pain.
Medicine has long searched for a common etiologic mechanism to explain diseases that share many symptoms in common, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and persistent Lyme disease. Professor of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University, Dr. Martin Pall noticed that the above disease states share many symptoms in common. These symptoms include chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pains, memory and concentration problems, mood disorders including depression and anxiety, and an inability to sleep. Back in 2001, he postulated that these illnesses with similar symptoms can all be initiated by a variety of factors, such as viral infections, bacterial infections, physical or emotional trauma, or exposure to environmental toxins, such as volatile organic solvents (VOS), pesticides, etc. These diverse stressors can all increase nitric oxide. Although nitric oxide has been shown to have extremely beneficial effects in the body such as lowering blood pressure and vasodilating the coronary arteries, it also can also have deleterious effects under certain conditions. What are the negative effects of nitric oxide?
When we stimulate nitric oxide (NO) production, we subsequently increase the production of peroxynitrite, which is a byproduct of the NO pathway. This molecule acts as a free radical, and increases oxidative stress, which can damage DNA and proteins inside the cell. It also can stimulate the production of NF-кB, a switch inside our nucleus that turns on the production of inflammatory molecules, such as IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFNγ (Interferon gamma). These are proteins which may contribute to the symptoms seen in Fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. It is therefore logical that apart from needing to address the underlying factors driving FM symptoms (i.e. treating the viral, bacterial, parasitic, and/or fungal infections, as well as treating overlapping etiologies on the MSIDS map, such as food allergies/sensitivities and mineral deficiencies), our therapy should focus on decreasing the free radical/oxidant byproducts of the nitric oxide biochemical cycle leading to fatigue and chronic pain. This would include a regimen of antioxidants, CoQ10, B vitamins, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), magnesium (Mag++), zinc (Zn++), omega 3 fatty acids, and glutathione precursors such as N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC), and glycine. When I treat the infections and use medicines and nutritional supplements that support detoxification, balance an overstimulated immune system (like LDN, low dose naltrexone), and decrease oxidative stress, the majority of my patients with FM improve.
How do you know if you have Lyme-MSIDS causing Fibromyalgia? Lyme disease is a multisystemic illness and there are certain hallmarks of the disease which differentiate it from other medical disorders. Symptoms tend to come and go with good and bad days. Musculoskeletal pain and neuropathy (tingling, numbness and burning sensations) tend to migrate around the body. Symptoms often improve or worsen with antibiotic therapy (a Jarish-Herxheimer reaction when the Lyme bacteria are being killed), and women often report that symptoms worsen right before, during, or after the menstrual cycle.
Fill out the associated Lyme-MSIDS questionnaire (link is external) (click here (link is external)). If you score 46 or higher on the questionnaire, there is a high probability that you suffer from Lyme disease and associated infections causing your FM (based on studies done in our medical office). Although blood testing lacks sufficient sensitivity to conclusively eliminate Lyme disease as a cause of FM, a Western Blot showing exposure to the 23, 31, 34, 39 and 83-93 kda bands is definitive evidence of exposure to Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, and helps to confirm the clinical diagnosis.
There is a commonly held belief in medicine, called Pasteur’s postulate that there is “one cause for one illness”. This does not apply to patients with chronic Lyme symptoms, or those diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Once we address infections like Lyme disease and all of the other underlying etiologies on the MSIDS 16 point map, resistant fibromyalgia symptoms often improve.
