Is Turmeric curcuma The Wonder Spice


Today's post from seattleorganicrestaurants.com (see link below) doesn't seem to have medical or scientific authorship but does refer to its sources. The reason I say that is because it makes some astonishing claims for the healing powers of Turmuric (Curcuma depending on where you live). Now even if only a tenth of these are bordering on the truth, it still comes over as a wonder-spice. Turmeric has long been advanced as a help for nerve pain and its symptoms (see other posts via the search button on this blog), so any lengthy article about the spice is certainly worth a look for neuropathy patients. I suggest you read it and then make your own minds up (maybe after also discussing it with a health professional or a qualified herbalist). You do slightly wonder why India and south east Asia in general isn't the healthiest place in the world, considering how much turmeric is used in their diet...but then again, look at the populations, that may be evidence enough😏

Turmeric and saffron are the two prominent spices used in South Asian and Middle Eastern dishes including Persians and Indians. Persian saffron and turmeric are very well-known because of their unique quality and taste. For thousands of centuries, curcumin known as turmeric has been used for its healing and medicinal properties. Here are some of the scientific studies about the health benefits of turmeric:



1. Lowering the level of bad cholesterol and improving heart health -- Alternative drugs: Lipitor and atorvastatin

A 2004 study published in the journal Atherosclerosis shows that turmeric can reduce the level of bad cholesterol and fight the plaque buildup in the arteries which is an important factor in developing heart diseases. Another 2008 study published in the journal Drugs in R & D shows that turmeric extract is as beneficial as the drugs used for inflammation and type 2 diabetics.

Besides lowering the bad cholesterol levels and fighting plaque buildup in the arteries, turmeric can improve the cardiovascular health. A study published in 2012 discovered that both exercise and curcumin supplements can significantly improve the cardiovascular health. In conclusion, turmeric can be as effective as conventional drugs such as Lipitor and atorvastatin (for lowering cholesterol and improving heart health), without having the side effects.

2. Great anti-inflammatory -- Alternative drugs: Corticosteroids and steroid

Inflammation is the root of many chronic diseases including cancer, arthritis, dementia and heart disease. Poor eating habits and high intake of omega 6 versus omega 3 is the leading cause of chronic inflammation. Studies show that turmeric is a great source of anti-inflammatory.

A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research showed that the powerful antioxidants in turmeric can be as effective as steroid in treatment of chronic anterior uveitis (an inflammatory eye disease). Another study published in Critical Care Medicine showed that turmeric is as effective as corticosteroid drug known as dexamethasone and can provide relief for inflamed areas of the body.

Also a study published in the journal Oncogene discovered that curcumin is as effective as other anti-inflammatory drugs that can kill cancer cells such as aspirin, ibuprofen, sulindac, phenylbutazone, naproxen, indomethacin, diclofenac, dexamethasone, celecoxib, and tamoxifen.

3. Improving depression and suppressing negative thoughts
-- Alternative drugs: Prozac/Fluoxetine, Imipramine

A study published in 2011 in the journal Acta Poloniae Pharmaceutica showed that turmeric can be as effective as anti-depressant drugs for improving depression and reducing negative thoughts, without having the side effects of anti-depressant drugs.

4. Blood thinner -- Alternative drug: Aspirin:

A study published in the journal Arzneimittelforschung discovered that curcumin has anti-platelet and prostacyclin modulating effects of aspirin and can help to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke without having the side effects of aspirin.



5. Destroying cancer cells -- Alternative drug: Chemotherapy


Studies show that turmeric can destroy and kill cancer cells. In 2007, a study published in the International Journal of Cancer showed that curcumin is as effective as oxaliplatin drug for treating colorectal cancer.

In another study published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, researchers discovered that turmeric can target the cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Also, another study published by researchers at University of Texas shows that turmeric is very effective in killing cancer cells and leaving healthy cells unharmed.

6. Diabetes -- Alternative drugs: Diabetes drugs such as Metformin

A 2009 study published in the journal Biochemitry and Biophysical Research showed that curcumin can be 500 times to 100,000 times (in the form known as tetrahydrocurcuminoids(THC)) more effective than diabetic drugs such as metformin. The researchers also concluded that turmeric can suppress glucose production in the liver and help diabetic patients.

7. Alzheimer's Disease or dementia: Alternative drugs: Memantine and Diclofenac

In a study published in Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology, the researchers discovered that taking one-quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric extract or powder daily can improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's and dementia.

According to the researchers, curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that can improve the cognitive functions in patients with AD. The authors suggest that “a growing body of evidence indicates that oxidative stress, free radicals, beta amyloid, cerebral deregulation caused by bio-metal toxicity and abnormal inflammatory reactions contribute to the key event in Alzheimer's disease pathology. Due to various effects of curcumin, such as decreased Beta-amyloid plaques, delayed degradation of neurons, metal-chelation, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and decreased microglia formation, the overall memory in patients with AD has improved”.

8. Protecting the brain damage due to heavy alcohol consumption:

In a study at PanjabUniversity Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the researchers found out that the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecule in turmeric known as curcumin can fight against chronic alcohol-induced cognitive dysfunction.

9. Anti-aging properties:

Studies show that the curcumin and its active metabolite, tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) could significantly increase the lifespan of three microorganisms including roundworms, Fruit flies and mice. According to the authors of the study, “given the long and established history of turmeric as a spice and herbal medicine, its demonstrated chemopreventive and therapeutic potential, and its pharmacological safety in model systems, curcumin, the bioactive extract of turmeric, promises a great future in human clinical studies designed to prevent and/or delay age-related diseases”.

10. Regenerating liver tissues:

In a study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, the researchers discovered that primary polyphenol in turmeric, can repair and even regenerate the liver tissues of diabetic rats.

HOMOEOPATHIC USES OF CURCUMA LONGA

Pharmacology:
Constituents: Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a polyphenol compound responsible for the bright yellow color of turmeric, is believed to be the principal pharmacological agent. It is prepared from the roots of Curcuma longa. In addition to curcumin, turmeric contains the curcuminoids atlantone, bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin, diaryl heptanoids, and tumerone. Turmeric also contains sesquiterpenoids7 and the constituent ar-tumerone. Other constituents include sugars, resins, proteins, vitamins, and minerals (including iron and potassium).
Alzheimer's effects: Beta-Amyloid (betaA)-induced oxidative stress is a well-established pathway of neuronal cell death in Alzheimer's disease.2 Three curcuminoids from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), including curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, were found to protect PC12 rat pheochromocytoma and normal human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVEC) cells from betaA(1-42) insult. These compounds may protect the cells from betaA(1-42) insult through antioxidant pathways. Other animal studies of Alzheimer's disease also suggest that curcumin may reduce levels of amyloid and oxidized proteins and prevent cognitive deficits.1 One alternative mechanism of action for these effects suggested by Baum et al. is metal chelation, which may reduce amyloid aggregation or oxidative neurotoxicity. Since curcumin more readily binds the redox-active metals and than the redox-inactive , curcumin might exert a net protective effect against beta toxicity or might suppress inflammatory damage by preventing metal induction of NF-kappaB. Mouse studies that evaluated the effects of dietary curcumin on inflammation, oxidative damage, and plaque pathology demonstrated that both low and high doses of curcumin significantly lowered oxidized proteins and interleukin-1beta, which is a proinflammatory cytokine elevated in the brains of these mice. Low-dose but not high-dose curcumin treatment has been shown to reduce the astrocytic marker GFAP and significantly decrease insoluble beta-amyloid (Abeta), soluble Abeta, and plaque burden by 43-50%. However, levels of amyloid precursor (APP) in the membrane fraction were not reduced.
Antibacterial effects: The ethyl acetate extract of Curcuma longa L. has demonstrated a higher antibacterial activity than the methanol extract or water extract.
Anti-inflammatory effects: Turmeric has been associated with the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-8, monocyte inflammatory protein-1, interleukin-1B, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 Turmeric and its constituent curcumin have been found to inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase in rat tissues and in vitro, as well as thromboxane B219 and leukotriene B4 formation Based on animal study, oral administration of curcumin may reduce expression of several cytokines, chemokines, and proteinases known to mediate aneurismal degeneration. In rat macrophages, curcumin inhibits the incorporation of arachidonic acid into membrane lipids, as well as prostaglandin E2, leukotriene B4, and leukotriene C4, but does not affect the release of arachidonic acid  Curcumin also inhibits the secretion of collagenase, elastase, and hyaluronidase. Inhibition of neutrophil function has been noted, and in vitro research demonstrates that curcumin inhibits 5-hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) in intact human neutrophils. Turmeric has been found to block cytokine-induced transcription of leukocyte adhesion molecules ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin, and it appears to induce the production of endogenous TGF-B1 in animal wounds.  Antioxidant effects: Turmeric has been reported to possess antioxidant properties in vitro and in animal studies. Turmeric preparations have been found to scavenge free radicals (peroxides) and phenolic oxidants, inhibit lipid peroxidation induced by chemical agents and inhibit iron-dependent lipid peroxidation in rat tissues. In vitro research shows that turmeric may prevent oxidative damage to DNA and may be a potent scavenger of nitric acid. Curcumin appears to generate a hydroxyl radical. Structural features of curcuminoids that may contribute to antioxidant activity include phenolic and methoxy groups on phenyl rings and diketones. Research using aqueous extracts of turmeric suggests that curcumin is not the only antioxidant in turmeric , and turmerin has been identified as a water-soluble peptide from turmeric with antioxidant properties . Animal studies have reported the reversal of hepatonecrosis and fatty changes associated with turmeric, with reversal of aflatoxin-induced liver damage.
Anti-platelet aggregation effects: Curcumin inhibits thromboxane A2 without affecting the synthesis of prostaglandin I2 In vitro, curcumin inhibits platelet aggregation induced by ADP, epinephrine, or collagen. Turmeric appears to inhibit arachidonic acid incorporation into platelet phospholipids, degradation of phospholipids, and cyclooxygenase. 
 Anti-proliferative effects: Multiple pre-clinical studies have explored potential anti-cancer mechanisms of curcumin
Lipid-lowering effects: In rat models of hyperlipidemia, a diet of 0.5% curcumin for eight weeks significantly lowered serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, possibly by enhancing the activity of hepatic cholesterol-7a-hydroxylase and increasing cholesterol catabolism. The turmeric constituents demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and acetylcurcumin appear to inhibit -stimulated lipid peroxidation in rat tissues and liver microsomes In a rat model of hyperlipidemia, a 50% ethanolic extract of turmeric was associated with a significant reduction in the ratio of total cholesterol to phospholipids. In rabbits fed a high cholesterol diet, oral turmeric (1.6-3.2mg/kg) was associated with lower levels of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides than a control group, although no differences in atherogenesis were noted on histological examination of aortas. Cholesterol levels were lower in the 1.6mg/kg group
Gastro-protective effects: Oral administration of turmeric to rats (500mg/kg) significantly reduces the incidence of chemically-induced duodenal ulcers and is associated with an increase in intestinal wall mucus and non-protein sulfhydryl content. However, early research in guinea pigs reported that various constituents of turmeric do not protect against histamine-induced gastric ulcerations.
Gallbladder effects: Gallbladder contraction over the two-hour period following the administration of 20mg curcumin has been demonstrated in humans. Animal research reports that curcumin in the diet reduces the incidence of chemically-induced gallstones in mice.
Hypoglycemic effects: Based on animal study, both curcuminoids and sesquiterpenoids in turmeric may exhibit hypoglycemic effects via PPAR-gamma activation
Weight loss effects: In a rat study that investigated a Chinese herbal formulation called Number Ten for weight loss, leptin and body fat decreased significantly in the treatment group compared to the control group (p<0.009 and p<0.006, respectively).

Curcumin Turmeric Curcuma For Neuropathic Problems


There are other posts on this blog about Turmeric/Curcuma/Cuurcumin (all the same thing) but this one from savvynaturalhealer.com (see link below) adds a little more information as to why it may be good for nerve damage and nerve protection. The article talks specifically about diabetic neuropathy but as with so many of these things, the information applies to most forms of neuropathy. Turmeric/Curcumin is certainly fast building up a reputation as something that really can help and has become a sort of 'trend' supplement across the Net. This of course, must be viewed with some reservation because although the medical establishment thinks there is probably some justification for the hype, they haven't done enough testing to prove anything yet. The best you can say is that it probably won't do you any harm, is cheap and many people swear by it. It may well be worth a try but you need to do your own research before you decide.

Recently I posted about the potential of curcumin, the antioxidant that is relatively abundant in turmeric, as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. I got a question about using curcumin for the most common long-term type 2 diabetes, diabetic neuropathy. Here's a reposting of a a comment I made on my other blog last year.

The bottom line of the current state of research is, curcumin seems like a good idea for treating diabetic neuropathy although the potential is yet to be proven. There is one subgroup of type 2 diabetics, however, who are especially likely to benefit.

The March-April 2010 edition of the Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences featured an article on the potential of curcumin, the prominent antioxidant in the curry spice turmeric, to treat a great variety of nerve disorders. "Curcumin demonstrates neuroprotective action" in "major depression, tardive dyskinesia, and diabetic neuropathy," authors of the paper stated, although "the mechanism of its neuroprotective action is not completely understood."

There is good evidence that curcumin is non-toxic. Curcumin is touted as antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic, antitumor, anticancer, antiphlogistic, antidiabetic, antipsoriasis, antithrombotic, and antihepatotoxic. Since it is a relatively small molecule, it enters the human bloodstream easily, and since it is a polar molecule (it has regions of relatively high positive and negative charge), it is easily absorbed by the brain. One of the peculiar characteristics of curcumin while it is still in turmeric is that it protects against radiation. It protects against radiation so well that any insects in bags of turmeric survive irradiation, and irradiating turmeric to make it shelf-stable actually accelerates its spoilage.

There are numerous theoretical reasons that curcumin should be helpful as a treatment for diabetic neuropathy. At the test-tube level, it protects astrocytes taken from brain tissue from destruction by free radicals. It seems to play a role in the regulatory evidence that control dopamine and serotonin levels.

The clinical evidence for curcumin as a treatment for diabetic neuropathy, unfortunately, does not yet exist. Panjab University in India did find that curcumin reduces insulin resistance in lab rats and increases sensitivity to pain (when the rats' paws were placed on a hot plate), but the study involved giving the rats insulin injections equivalent to 500 to 1,500 U a day in a human, half a vial to a vial and a half a day, vastly more than even the most insulin-resistant type 1 diabetic takes. And there's no way to know if these results with lab rats would translate even for the most insulin-resistant type 2 diabetics, who happen to take large amounts of insulin.

Moreover, while curcumin circulates in the body easily once it is absorbed from the digestive tract, it is very difficult for the body to absorb curcumin from the digestive tract. Curcumin bound to a phytosome is absorbed about twice as well as other forms of the supplement, but it's a little early to be recommending curcumin as more than optional treatment for type 2 diabetics. It won't hurt, but it's far from guaranteed to help for most diabetics.

Type 2 diabetics whose underlying problem is a condition called hemochromatosis (high iron levels), however, are a lot more likely to be helped by taking curcumin. Just don't use curcumin as your sole method of treatment for the disease. Work with a physician who has experience with the disease to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Yet More Dosage Information About Turmeric Curcuma For Neuropathy


Today's post from turmericforhealth.com (see link below) maybe should be taken with a pinch of salt (or in the case of turmeric (curcuma)...a pinch of pepper!). The claims for turmeric are becoming more exaggerated by the day. However, there's nothing wrong with turmeric and it can't do you much harm, so even if half the claims are even partly true, then you may be making a wise dietary move by including it in your daily supplementation for nerve pain. The article mentions adding pepper to your intake several times but doesn't really explain why this is necessary. Because turmeric will leave your system before you can blink, there has to be a binding agent for better absorption and in this case, pepper will do nicely. (There are other methods of improving absorption (see here) The article provides lots of useful information to stimulate further research but never blindly believe everything you read here. It may be true but then again it may not and healthy skepticism will always prevent disappointment. That said, the authors also provide warnings and general good advice about taking turmeric sensibly and as such, this is an interesting read that will fill in some of the gaps in your knowledge about turmeric (curcuma).

Best Ways To Take Turmeric For Nerve Pain or Neuropathy

Disclaimer – There is no particular prescribed dose of turmeric defined for Neuropathic Pain. Based on the studies and reader’s reports we have summarized various ways of taking turmeric which could benefit in this disorder.

The dosage depends in terms of the formulation and severity of the condition. Here is the recommended dose:


Fresh roots

Turmeric roots are a great addition to diet but the limited quantities we eat cannot exert a significant therapeutic effect in neuropathic pain.

Recommended intake: 1-3 g or ½ inch long piece of root sliced or chopped. You can also juice it and take it with a pinch of black pepper.

This can be a part of your fresh juices or taken individually as 30 ml thrice a day to curb pain. You can also make Golden paste from fresh roots.

Turmeric powder

If you are including turmeric powder in cooking then 1 tsp daily is sufficient. Always opt for good quality organic turmeric powder (How to identify organic turmeric, Recommended Turmeric brands)

However if you take turmeric powder straight with black pepper then it would be 1-2 g of turmeric powder with a pinch of black pepper.

In terms of teaspoon that would be 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper powder twice a day.

Start with small doses and increase gradually. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach. You can also make Turmeric capsules at home.

Maximum dose: 1 tsp of turmeric powder with ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper thrice a day


Golden Paste

Golden Paste combines heat, black pepper and healthy fats to increase the absorption of turmeric.

You can also make Golden Paste from fresh roots.


Start with small doses such as 1/4-1/2 tsp and if you see no side effects then increase the dose by ¼ teaspoon every week. Continue till reach a dose of 1-2 tsp 2-3 times a day (precisely 1 tsp 3 times a day).

Also if the pain is too severe you can consider splitting the dose and taking it in regular intervals. Or you may increase the dose.

This is the ideal dose of Golden Paste where you should experience relief. The ideal dose differs with every individual; some do fine on a small dose while some may need more.

Turmeric tincture

Some individuals swear by turmeric tincture’s pain relief action. And it also skips the taste issue.
