Strange Symptoms May Be Nerve Damage

Today's post from delraybeachpodiatry.com (see link below) comes from the point of view of a podiatrist (foot care specialist) and is a useful short description of what sort of symptoms might tell you you are suffering from nerve damage. There are many articles on the internet (and here on this blog) about what neuropathy is but sometimes you just need to know what the reason behind your troubling and strange symptoms is. If you feel that you may be suffering from neuropathy, go to your doctor. The symptoms alone should tell him or here that there is nerve damage involved.

How to Identify the Symptoms of Neuropathy
Posted on September 14, 2016 by Jameson Olive |

An estimated 20 million people in the United States suffer from some form of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects the normal activity of the nerves that connect the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord — to the rest of the body.

Peripheral neuropathy can involve various different nerve types, including motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves. It can also be categorized by the size of the nerve fibers involved, large or small.

In the world of podiatry, most cases of peripheral neuropathy are found in the feet and develop from nerve damage caused by diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy can occur in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce the insulin necessary to convert glucose into the energy that the body needs. Type 2 diabetes, which is far more common, occurs when the body is unable to use insulin properly. It has been estimated that between 60 to 70 percent of diabetics will deal with some form of neuropathy in their lifetime, compared to only a 25 to 30 percent chance for non-diabetics.

The condition can also manifest itself in the feet as a side effect from certain medications, neurological disorders, arthritis or as a result from a traumatic injury. As of today, more than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy have been identified, each with its own symptoms and prognosis, and are classified according to the type of damage to the nerves have sustained.

So how do you know if you are suffering from peripheral neuropathy?

Symptoms of neuropathy vary depending on the type and location of the nerves involved. The symptoms either appear suddenly, which is called acute neuropathy, or develop slowly over time, called chronic neuropathy.

Dr. Ian S. Goldbaum, a board certified podiatrist with over 30 years of experience, sees over 500 patients a month suffering from neuropathy at his offices in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach.

According to Dr. Goldbaum, the most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy found in the feet of his patients are cramping sensations, numbing sensations, tightening, tingling or burning, and an overall decrease in sensation. A change in how the toes feel sensations often also signals that something might be wrong.

Other symptoms may also include:
Muscle atrophy
Loss of coordination
Loss of reflexes
Feeling that you are wearing socks or gloves when you are not
Difficulty walking or moving your arms or legs
Muscle twitching
Skin, hair or nail changes.
Inability to detect changes in heat and cold

If you believe you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it is important to seek out your health care provider as soon as possible as these ailments might not only be a sign of peripheral neuropathy, but could also indicate the onset of an underlying disorder like diabetes. Early diagnosis and treatment offer the best chance for controlling your symptoms and preventing further damage to your peripheral nerves.

How To Help Friends Understand Neuropathy Symptoms

Today's post from supportforchronicpain.com (see link below) may sound a little corny and/or contrived but it reflects one of the commonest problems that's brought by readers to this blog's attention concerning living with neuropathy and that is...other people's total misunderstanding of the situation. Nobody's at fault here - it's just a lack of knowledge as to how neuropathy works but what this letter does is carefully 'educate' the reader, without bitterness or rancour and as such may be extremely useful if people's reactions to your problem leave you speechless and frustrated. May be worth sending to assorted family and friends!

Letter to a friend

The ‘Letter to a friend’ has been circulating the internet for years, and is constantly being adjusted by those using it. I definitely believe that the letter deserves a spot on this website – rarely have I seen the things that you’d want to tell to your partner, family, friends and colleagues phrased in such an eloquent way:

Dear friend,

You know that I am a chronic pain patient. Having chronic pain means many things change, and many of them are invisible. Unlike having cancer or being hurt in an accident, most people do not understand even a little about chronic pain and its effects, and of those who think they know, many are actually misinformed. When the illness or pain is invisible to the naked eye, the consequences can be even more destructive.

Social relationships of chronic pain patients often suffer. Of course that’s not something I want to happen, as that makes my pain only harder to bear. I would like to use this letter to explain what suffering from chronic pain means to me.

Please understand that being sick doesn’t mean I’m not the same person I was before. I am forced to spend most of my day in considerable pain and exhaustion, and if you visit, I probably don’t seem like much fun to be with sometimes, but I’m still me, stuck inside this body. I still worry about work, my family, my friends, and most of the time, I’d still like to hear you talk about yours, too. Please tell me about the cool things you have done, or the problems you have. I still want to be a good friend to you, and I don’t want us to stop talking about everything we love to talk about.

Please understand the difference between “happy” and “healthy.” When you’ve got the flu, you probably feel miserable, but I’ve been sick for years. I can’t be miserable all the time. In fact, I work hard at not being miserable. So, if you’re talking to me and I sound happy, it means I’m happy. that’s all. It doesn’t mean that I’m not in a lot of pain, or that I’m not extremely tired, or that I’m getting better, or any of those things. Please don’t say, “Oh, you’re sounding better!” or “But you look so healthy!” I am merely coping. I am sounding happy and I am trying to look normal. If you want to comment on that, you’re welcome to do so.

Please understand that being able to stand up for ten minutes doesn’t necessarily mean that I can stand up for twenty minutes, or an hour. Just because I managed to stand up for thirty minutes yesterday doesn’t mean that I can do the same today. With a lot of diseases you’re either paralysed, or you can move. With this one, it gets more confusing every day. It can be a bit like a yo-yo. I never know how I am going to feel when I wake up the next day. In most cases, I don’t even know know on a minute to minute basis. That is one of the hardest and most frustrating components of chronic pain. Please repeat the above paragraph substituting “standing’ with “sitting”, “walking”, “thinking”, “concentrating”, “being sociable” and so on, it applies to everything. That’s what chronic pain does to you.

Please understand that chronic pain is variable. It’s quite possible (for many, it’s common) that one day I am able to walk to the park and back, while the next day I’ll have trouble getting to the next room. Please don’t attack me when I’m ill by saying, “But you did it before!” or “Oh, come on, I know you can do this!” If you want me to do something, then ask if I can. I still love to be invited for nice things, maybe even more than I used to. I will tell you whether I can go or not. In a similar vein, I may need to cancel a previous commitment at the last minute. If this happens, please do not take it personally. If you are able, please try to always remember how very lucky you are, to be physically able to do all of the things that you can do.

Please understand that “getting out and doing things” does not make me feel better, and can often even make me significantly worse. You don’t know what I go through or how I suffer in my own private time. Telling me that I need to exercise, or do some things to “get my mind off of it”, may frustrate me to tears, and it is incorrect. If I was capable of doing some things at any- or all of the time, don’t you think that I would? I am working with my doctors and I am doing all that I can. Another statement that hurts is, “You just need to push yourself more, try harder”. Obviously, chronic pain can affect the whole body, or it might target specific areas. Sometimes, participating in a single activity for a short or a long period of time can cause more damage and physical pain than you could ever imagine. Not to mention the recovery time, which can be intense. You can’t always read it on my face or in my body language. Also, chronic pain may cause secondary depression (wouldn’t you get depressed and down if you were hurting constantly for months or years at a time?). I do like when you encourage me to do my exercises or when you help me find new activities that I am able to do, and it would be wonderful if you compliment me when I manage to do them.

Please understand that if I say that I have to sit down, lie down, stay in bed, or take my medicines right now, that probably means that I do have to do it right now, It can’t be put off or forgotten just because I’m somewhere, or because I’m right in the middle of doing something. Chronic pain does not wait for anyone. If you want to suggest a cure to me, please don’t. It’s not because I don’t appreciate the thought, and it’s not because I don’t want to get better. Lord knows that I’d love to. In all likelihood, if you’ve heard of it or tried it, so have I. In some cases, I have been made sicker, not better. This can involve side effects or allergic reactions, as is the case with herbal remedies. It also includes failure, which in and of itself can make me feel even worse. If there were something that cured, or even helped people with my form of chronic pain, then we’d know about it. There is worldwide networking (both on and off the Internet) between people with chronic pain. If something worked, we would KNOW. It’s definitely not for lack of trying. If, after reading this, you still feel the need to suggest a cure, then so be it. I may take what you said and discuss it with my doctor.

Please understand that if I seem touchy, it’s probably because I am. It’s not how I try to be. As a matter of fact, I try very hard to be normal. I hope you will try to understand. I have been, and am still, going through a lot. Chronic pain is hard for you to understand unless you have had it. It wreaks havoc on the body and the mind. It is exhausting and exasperating. Almost all the time, I know that I am doing my best to cope with this, and live my life to the best of my ability. I ask you to bear with me, and accept me as I am. I know that you cannot literally understand my situation unless you have been in my shoes, but as much as is possible, I am asking you to try to be understanding in general. In many ways I depend on you, people who are not sick. I need you to visit me when I am too sick to go out. Sometimes I need you help me with the shopping, the cooking or the cleaning. I may need you to take me to the doctor, or to the store. You are my link to the “normalcy” of life. You can help me to keep in touch with the parts of life that I miss and fully intend to undertake again, just as soon as I am able. I know that you care about me, that you feel helpless because you cannot put an end to my pain. Please, don’t let this feeling of powerlessness come between us. I don’t need you to cure me, I need you as my friend!I know that I asked a lot from you, and I do thank you for listening. It really does mean a lot.

Love from me

Twenty Neuropathy Symptoms

Today's post from neuropathyjournal.org (see link below) is meant to help people facing strange symptoms for the first time and wondering whether they may be as a result of nerve damage. It's a useful list in that it covers most of the discomforts brought about by neuropathy but it's important to realise that you don't need to experience them all in order to be suffering from nerve damage. Whether you have just one from the list, or several, it's sensible to take these symptoms first to your home doctor and then (if necessary) to a nerve specialist (neurologist). Very often, your story and symptoms themselves will be enough to establish a diagnosis but be prepared to face a scala of tests and a variety of 'test the water' treatments. Unfortunately, if you have neuropathy you need to be prepared for the long haul.

How To Identify And Manage Nerve Damage Symptoms

Today's post from littlethings.com (see link below) is yet another list of things to do to identify and help with neuropathy. (Why do we all love lists so much...one of the features of the 21st century!?) Despite the many self-help lists on the internet, this is a very useful one, especially for people new to neuropathy, who have difficulty understanding all the medical science their doctor has thrown at them. It explains simply what neuropathy is and how it can affect you and goes on to provide several ideas for learning to manage the disease. Many experienced neuropathy sufferers will be aware of most of what's said here but equally, many will benefit from the clear description and practical ideas. It's at least a starting point for further research.

Neuropathy: 12 Ways To Identify And Manage This Painful Disease
Laura Caseley 2016

Aches and pains are part of life. Everyone experiences a twinge here and a pang there, but what happens when it becomes all too frequent and severe, to the point where it’s getting in the way of your life?

However, if your aches, pains, and stiffness cause extreme changes in your body — like excess sweating, loss of bladder control, and high blood pressure — you might be suffering from neuropathy, a little-known but complex disease of the nervous system.

Neuropathy comes in many forms and can affect either just one nerve — in which case it’s called mononeuropathy — or several —and then it’s called polyneuropathy.

It can come on slowly over many years, or start all of a sudden. It can also come as a result of treatment for another condition, in which case it’s called peripheral neuropathy.

Anything that affects your nerves is serious business, because your nerves control, well, everything.

Not only to they allow us to experience the world via the sense of touch, but they also control organs and prompt the body to respond involuntarily to temperature and other factors. When a nerve is upset, it can cause pain in everything from your legs to your teeth.

If you’re concerned that something might be amiss with your nerves, check out the symptoms of neuropathy below. And if you think you might have it, see the ways you can soothe it at home.

Typically, people with neuropathy will have to take medical steps with the help of a doctor or specialist, but these at-home tips can be used alongside medical therapies — with a doctor’s permission, of course.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a disease of the nerves that impairs motion, gland or organ function, and sensation. In total, it affects some 24 million Americans.

Common causes include heavy alcohol consumption, immune system diseases, traumatic injury, celiac disease, hypothyroidism, radiation and chemotherapy, and viral infections.

About 30% of cases are also associated with diabetes. Certain classes of antibiotics can also be causes, and sometimes, neuropathy can also be congenital.

Neuropathy can take several forms, but there are some common symptoms.

The best way to determine exactly which nerves are effected is to to talk to a doctor or neurologist.

How Can I Tell If I Have Neuropathy?

Symptom #1: Numbness Of Limbs

Neuropathy, particularly peripheral neuropathy, is often characterized by a feeling of numbness or heaviness in the limbs, making them hard to move.

Numbness may also appear in other parts of the body, but it’s most commonly felt in the arms and legs.

Symptom #2: Muscle Weakness

Lifting things and even moving around becomes increasingly difficult with neuropathy, which makes the muscles feel weak and tired.

Some people also experience tremors.

Symptom #3: Difficulty With Coordination

As the muscles become increasingly numb and weak, it can start to effect motor skills.

Depending on which nerves the neuropathy is affecting, this can make fine motor functions like writing difficult, and can even affect walking and balance.

Symptom #4: Stabbing Or Burning Pain

Tingling, stabbing, burning, or pins-and-needles pain is also very common with neuropathy, as nerves misfire in your body.

Some people also develop allodynia, in which even light touches to the skin result in sharp pains.

Symptom #5: Bowel And Bladder Problems

If the autonomic nervous system is affected, it can also lead to issues with the bowels and bladder, typically constipation and difficulty urinating.

If you suspect you might have neuropathy, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she can create a management plan to help your symptoms.

How Can I Manage Neuropathy?

Remedy #1: Avoid Gluten, Refined Sugars, And Trans Fats

After speaking to your doctor and getting their professional opinion, you can try managing your symptoms with a few simple life changes.

There’s a correlation between celiac and neuropathy, and many people with neuropathy seem to have some level of gluten sensitivity, so try cutting it out of your diet.

Gluten, along with refined sugars, can cause inflammation in the digestive system and increase blood sugar, which can cause damage to nerves.

This is also especially true for cases in which diabetes is involved.

Alcohol should also be avoided.

Remedy #2: Spice Up Your Meals

Cayenne pepper is a great additive anyway, but even better if you have neuropathy.

It has a high content of capsaicin, the compound that makes things spicy. Capsaicin is also a natural pain reliever and improves circulation throughout the body.

You can add a sprinkle to your meals, and if you don’t like spicy food, you can also take capsaicin as a supplement.

Remedy #3: Take A Hot Shower

Just like the heat from capsaicin helps from the inside, heat from a hot shower will help with pain from the outside.

It feels great, and it also helps improve circulation and to relax muscles. A hot bath works, too.

Remedy #4: Take Care Of Your Feet

Numbness or diminished feeling in the feet can be especially dangerous, because you can injure them without even realizing it.

Neuropathy is very common in the feet, and so if you’re dealing with it, your feet will need extra attention.

Wear comfy socks and shoes and make sure your tootsies are clean and free of any cuts, and keep your toenails short and cut straight across.

Remedy #5: Try Acupuncture Or Chiropractic Care

In addition to a your regular doctor, visiting a chiropractor or acupuncturist can also help soothe the aches and pains.

These treatments can help improve circulation, which gets oxygen and nutrients to the affected nerves, helping them function better.

Remedy #6: Take Your Vitamins

Getting the right vitamins, especially your B vitamins, is very important when it comes to neuropathy.

You can take these as supplements (just don’t take more than 50 mgs of B-6 per day), or stock up on B-rich foods like beans, lean meats, nuts, and fruits and vegetables.

Remember, be sure to speak to your doctor before beginning any new supplement or dietary plan.

Have you ever suffered from nerve issues? What was the remedy that helped you the most?

Sensus An Alternative Electrotherapy For Neuropathic Symptoms

Today's post from sensusrx.com (see link below) announces a new portable, wearable electro-sensory unit comparable to the better known TENS units. From reading the promotion, it certainly sounds easier, more convenient and more sophisticated but you should always be aware that these electrotherapy devices don't work for everybody at the same levels and may disappoint the buyer. That said, many people swear by them so it's best to discuss it thoroughly with your doctor or specialist and do your own research before taking the plunge.

How is SENSUS Optimized for Painful Diabetic Neuropathy?  SENSUS Blog Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015

SENSUS was designed to meet the unique needs of those suffering from neuropathic pain conditions such as painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN). People with diabetes and PDN often have physiology that responds differently to electrotherapy than that of someone without diabetes. For instance, nerve degeneration and elevated skin resistance to electrical stimulation are typical in those with diabetes. Effective pain relief may therefore require a more powerful device with higher stimulation output. Most conventional TENS devices do not have the capability of delivering the stimulation characteristics that are needed for those with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and therefore may have limited efficacy and utility for treating PDN.

SENSUS is a wearable pain relief device designed to provide the user the freedom to be active while they are receiving therapy. Conventional TENS units include multiple individual electrodes connected to lead wires, which may be awkward to place for pain in the lower legs and feet and it would inhibit the user’s mobility. The SENSUS and integrated electrode are placed on the upper calf. The device is slim enough to be worn discreetly under clothing so the user can go about their daily activities while therapy is being provided.

Since PDN often disrupts sleep, traditional TENS devices are not an option for night time pain relief because they cannot be used during sleep. SENSUS is the only nerve stimulator approved by the FDA for use during sleep so it is an option for around the clock pain relief.

Finally, most people with diabetes have complicated treatment programs involving multiple medications and devices such as blood glucose meters. Consequently, many of them will want to avoid an addition to their therapeutic regime that is unnecessarily complicated. Unlike conventional TENS devices, SENSUS is highly automated and can be setup by at home in just a few minutes. Therapy is initiated and stopped by pressing the sole button on the device and will automatically run throughout the day without any management on the part of the user.

The SENSUS Pain Management System has been optimized for people with diabetes, and includes advanced technology to enhance convenience while maximizing pain relief.

Reflexology May Reduce Neuropathy Symptoms

Today's post from modernreflexology.com (see link below) is another post promoting the benefits of acupressure, reflexology and acupuncture for neuropathy symptoms. The first half of the article describes what neuropathy is and how you can recognise it and is useful for these reasons alone but the second half provides more information than most on how reflexology works and how you can best use it in your own individual case. It very sensibly warns that you need to find a good reflexology practitioner and have realistic expectations of the outcomes. Whatever you may feel about alternative therapies, they are mostly worth at least a try...we know how ineffective standard drugs can be right!

How Reflexology Helps with Peripheral Neuropathy Nerve Damage
By Bipasha Mukherjee

What is Peripheral neuropathy? It is a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, which often causes weakness, numbness, and pain, mostly in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Your peripheral nervous system sends information from your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of your body. Peripheral neuropathy causes can range from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and exposure to toxins. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common causes.

People with peripheral neuropathy generally experience an intense searing pain which feels like stabbing, burning or tingling. In many cases, symptoms tend to improve, especially if caused by a treatable condition. Some medicines can reduce the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms

Each nerve in your peripheral system has a particular function to perform, so peripheral neuropathy symptoms depend on the type of nerves affected. Nerves are classified into several divisions like:

Sensory nerves receiving sensation, such as temperature, pain, vibration or touch, from the skin.
Motor nerves, which are in control of the motor nerves.
Autonomic nerves, which control important functions like blood pressure, digestion, bladder and heart.

Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are as follows:
Gradual onset of numbness and prickling or tingling in your feet or hands, which can even spread to the entire length of your legs and feet.
Sharp shooting, jabbing, throbbing, freezing or burning pain
Unable to control movements.
Touch sensitivity which sometimes reaches extreme levels.
Weakness of muscles or paralysis if motor nerves are affected.
If autonomic nerves are affected, the signs and symptoms might include:
Intolerance to heat and change in sweating habits.
Bowel problems, bladder disorders or digestive problems.
Fluctuations in blood pressure, causing dizziness or lightheadedness.

Peripheral neuropathy can affect one nerve (mononeuropathy), two or more nerves in different areas (multiple mononeuropathies) or many nerves (polyneuropathy). Carpal tunnel syndrome is an example of mononeuropathy. People with peripheral neuropathy may suffer from polyneuropathy.

Take Care of your Feet

Incorporating a few lifestyle changes is the first thing you should do to minimize your symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.

Take care of your feet by wearing soft cotton socks and well-padded
Exercise is must as it helps control blood sugar levels
Quit smoking to improve blood circulation
Eat healthy meals to maximize your intake of vitamins, minerals from low-fat food sources like low-fat meats, dairy products, whole grains and fruits
Avoid putting undue pressure by making a conscious effort to not cross your legs or lean on your elbows
Massage your hands and feet or better still request someone to massage them for you.

Why Reflexology is Important for Peripheral Neuropathy

Reflexology is a technique based on a system of points on the hands, feet, and ears that correspond, or “reflex,” to other areas of the body. In similitude to the theory to acupressure, reflexologists believe that applying appropriate pressure to these points stimulates the flow of energy, thus helping to relieve pain or congestions throughout the entire body. A very pleasurable form of bodywork, reflexology is also used to ease stress and promote relaxation.

Reflexology for neuropathy works with the help of chemical, electrical, and nervous systems of the body – sending messages across to balance organs and parts in far reaching areas of the body. With neuropathy, reflexology has a great option of gently activating the damaged nerve fibers to send and receive correct nerve signals. Through light to moderate pressure techniques, a stable rhythm of information is sent and received through the Central Nervous System. We see a marked improvement in blood and lymph circulation throughout the body, an improvement in nerve response, and a general sense of wellbeing after a Reflexology treatment. Research shows that using Reflexology for peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, phantom limb pain and other forms of neuropathic pain, may benefit people who are reeling under the effects of such conditions.

Acupressure and its Effects on Peripheral Neuropathy

Acupressure may help with peripheral neuropathy treatment, because as per most practitioners of acupressure, they employ massage protocol to improve circulation and acupuncture to relieve pain. Acupressure activates the same points as acupuncture but uses finger pressure instead of needles. They search the location of an acupressure point until they feel a small indentation or tender spot, and then apply continuous pressure with the thumb or index finger. The tender areas need to be kneaded gently to avoid causing pain.

Points for Feet

First, you need to choose acupressure points on your lower legs and feet for treating the area affected by neuropathy. Activate pressure point K6 to relieve heel and ankle pain. Find K6, a thumb-width right below your ankle bone on the inside folds of your leg. Look for the indentation in that area then continue to press steadily with your thumb for one or two minutes. Find B62 in a hollow between your outer ankle bone and the bottom of your heel, about 1/3 of the way down. Press B62 gently for about 10 seconds, then release and repeat five to 10 times. Points GB30, GB34, GB39 and SP6 may also help with lower limb neuropathy.

Points for Hands

Press Lu10 by applying pressure to the center of your thumb pad on the palm side of your hand. Look for LI4 point by pressing your thumb and index finger together. Press the thumb of the opposite hand into the highest point on the bulge in the webbing between the thumb and forefinger. You may also try the Baxie points, SJ5, LI11 and LI15 for neuropathy in your upper limbs.

Find the Right Acupressure Therapist

You should find the right acupuncturist for the best results. If you like and trust your practitioner, your tryst with acupuncture will be more positive. You will also want to know about the acupuncturists training and experience and what to expect from the acupuncture treatment.

The results are more positive if you decide in advance what your expectations are and discuss them with your acupuncturist. An acute or chronic illness may need several months of acupuncture treatment to have a noticeable effect. If you are unhappy with your progress, think about changing acupuncturists or check with your doctor for advice about other options to consider.

The more you know about the practice, the clearer your perception of who is treating you what the treatment is, the more you will be able to relax during the acupuncture session and derive a multitude of benefits from this ancient form of health care.
